Busch Gardens Van Nuys opened in 1964 on the grounds of Anheuser-Busch’s Los Angeles brewery in the San Fernando Valley. Unlike commercial theme parks charging substantial admission fees, Busch Gardens offered free entry—the brewery wanted community goodwill more than ticket revenue. This radical approach to amusement parks USA made Busch Gardens accessible to families across economic backgrounds during an era when Disneyland admission represented significant expense.
Exotic bird shows represented Busch Gardens’ signature attraction. Trained macaws, cockatoos, and other tropical birds performed shows delighting children and adults alike.
The park’s 1979 closure resulted from changing economics and corporate priorities.
