Not every league gets a second act. In 1989, a handful of baseball veterans decided retirement didn’t have to mean the end of competitive ball, and the Senior Professional Baseball Association was born. St. Petersburg was one of the eight original cities to back that idea, and the Pelicans carried the city’s name into a short but genuinely fascinating chapter of the sport’s history.
A Franchise That Actually Existed
This design isn’t a fictional mascot dreamed up for merchandise. The Pelicans were real, one of the founding franchises of a league built specifically for players over 35 who weren’t ready to hang it up. The script logo, the pelican mark, the “ESTD 1989” detail, all of it reflects an actual identity from a league that, while short-lived, left behind one of the more interesting footnotes in professional baseball.
