Spokane World Expo Graphic Tee, Expo ’74, The First Environmental World’s Fair
Spokane was not the obvious choice. A city of roughly 170,000 people, it remains the smallest to ever host a world’s fair, and it did so with a theme that looked years ahead of its time. Expo ’74, officially the International Exposition on the Environment, ran from May 4 to November 3, 1974, and staked its identity on a subject most fairs of that era weren’t touching at all: environmental responsibility.
A Fair Built Around an Idea, Not a Spectacle
Where earlier expositions leaned on futurism and technology for its own sake, Spokane’s fair asked visitors to think about rivers, air, and land. The site itself was a reclaimed rail yard along the Spokane River, cleaned up and repurposed rather than built from scratch. That choice alone made Expo ’74 something closer to a statement than an event. The logo on this shirt, with its geometric mark and clean typographic lockup, comes straight from that era’s design language rather than a modern reinterpretation of it.
