The Mantis roller coaster debuted at Cedar Point in 1996 as the tallest, fastest, and longest stand-up roller coaster in the world. It was designed and built by Bolliger & Mabillard and opened to the public on May 11, 1996.

Stand-up roller coasters represented late 1990s innovation—parks competing to build the tallest, fastest, most unusual coaster experiences. The format never gained lasting popularity because standing through inversions and high G-forces proved more painful than thrilling for most riders.
Mantis at Cedar Point exemplified this trend. At 145 feet tall with four inversions, it claimed the tallest stand-up coaster title when it opened. The ride delivered intensity, just not always the comfortable kind. Enthusiasts debated whether the discomfort came from poor restraint design or inherent problems with the stand-up format itself.
