Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge

Howard Johnson’s peaked in the 1960s and 70s with over 1,000 locations dotting American highways. The orange roof and Simple Simon mascot became synonymous with family road trips, reliable lodging, and 28 flavors of ice cream at the attached restaurants.
By the 1990s, most locations had closed or rebranded. Today, fewer than five original Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodges remain operational. This graphic t-shirt preserves what interstate homogenization erased—the aesthetic of mid-century American travel.

The company pioneered franchise models that Holiday Inn, Best Western, and modern hotel chains would later perfect. Howard Johnson’s proved Americans would pay premium prices for consistency over local motels with uncertain quality.

That business model ultimately killed the brand. Once competitors mastered the formula, Howard Johnson’s lost its differentiation. The orange roofs disappeared, the Simple Simon mascot retired, the motor lodges converted to generic franchises or closed entirely.

This vintage graphic t-shirt commemorates that specific chapter of American commercial architecture and travel culture most people under 40 never experienced.

FAQ

What is an 80s tee?

An 80s tee is a graphic T-shirt made in the 1980s, or designed to look as if it had been. The originals covered concerts, films, television shows, ball clubs, tourist attractions and local businesses, printed on thin cotton or cotton-polyester blanks. Today the term covers both surviving originals and new shirts built on the same look.

What products do you offer ?

The shop covers t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, tanks, and long sleeves, along with hats, mugs, and a growing range of accessories built around the same artwork. New pieces are added as new designs and collections come together.

Oui. Merch on Demand d’Amazon est non exclusif.

Are products made to order ?

Yes. Nothing is pre-printed or held in warehouse stock. Each order goes into production only after it's placed, which is what allows the shop to carry a wide, specific catalog instead of a narrow set of pre-stocked bestsellers.

What is your return policy ?

Returns and exchanges are handled directly, order number and details required. Full terms are outlined in the return policy.

Road trips used to have landmarks worth stopping for.  Orange roofs, teal graphics, and a chain that once owned the American highway before it quietly vanished from every exit ramp in the country. Soft cotton and a logo that still hits harder than anything built after it.
